Day 1

ARRIVAL YANGON (L)

Mingalabar and welcome to Myanmar! The former capital Yangon, also known as Rangoon, remains Myanmar largest city and continues to be the country’s the most important commercial hub and gateway for most of its international visitors. Its colonial background and religious legacy make it one of the most mesmerizing and genuine places in all of Southeast Asia. Upon arrival at the airport you will be warmly welcomed by your Myanmar Diaries guide who will take you to your hotel for check in.

Lunch at local restaurant

Have an introductory tour of Yangon, starting with Sule Pagoda, old colonial city and Chinatown. Enjoy a tasty traditional Burmese lunch before visiting the spiritual Shwedagon Pagoda, through the little known alleys of bustling street and market. Stop by Strand Hotel or a local teashop for a drink. Return to Shwedagon Pagoda after sunset when it is illuminated for a different perspective view of this outstanding monument in Southeast Asia.

Day 2

YANGON-BAGAN (B,L)

After breakfast you’ll be transferred to the airport for your domestic flight to Bagan.

Bagan is the most amazing sight in Myanmar if not Southeast Asia. Across 42 square km of the country, there are literally thousands of stupas, temples and monasteries. In every direction, you will see ruins of all sizes, some soaring into the sky and others standing quaintly at a corner. The meandering Ayeyarwady River completes the scene.

This is Bagan! Full day tour of the temples with picnic lunch and sundowner

We start the day climbing a pagoda for a first impressive view over the whole area. From here, your exploration of this amazing city starts from Gubyaukgyi Temple, famous for its frescoes. Then, continue to Ananda, rated by many as the most beautiful in Bagan and the uncompleted Dhammayangyi stupa and its chilling ghost stories! Oh… we forgot to mention the best part of this tour; whenever you see a temple you like, just ask your guide to stop – simply pick your own favourite temple.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in a quiet and often completely deserted temple ruins. As the day wanes, we continue the tour by horse cart and climb up Pyathagyi Pagoda for the most dramatic sunset over Bagan, complete with a refreshing drink!

Day 3

BAGAN-POPA-BAGAN (B,L)

This morning, you have a choice of activity:

“Nats” about Mt Popa

Make an excursion to Mt. Popa which rose from the ground in a massive earthquake in 442 BC. Mt. Popa is famous as the abode of the “nats” (Spirit Gods) and for its panoramic view of the local tropical region. On the way to Mt. Popa, visit the rural village life in Shwe See Htein village as well as the fruit and flower market and plantations near Popa.

Off the tourist trail – Markets and Monasteries at Pakokku

If you feel like you have seen most of the temples (or at least enough) in Bagan and wish to discover a bit more of the Myanmar countryside, this is for you!

Drive about an hour through the lush countryside and crosses the Ayeyarwady River to Pakokku. Wind through the crowded lanes in the local market, visit the tobacco and thanaka shop (paste from the bark of Thanaka tree applied to the face for cosmetic purposes) and the slippers shop, which the town is famous for. We then visit the Alai Teik Monastery with its giant clock towers and where the ‘saffron revolution” started in 2007. Make a stop at a cave temple on the way back to Bagan.

Sundowner on a Sandbank during sunset

As the heat of the day starts to cool off, relax on a scenic boat ride on the Ayeyarwaddy River and enjoy a sundowner, served with cocktails and snacks on a sandbank in the middle of the river (if the water level is not too high), where you catch another magnificent sunset.

Day 4

BAGAN-HEHO-INLE LAKE (B,L)

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Heho.

Arrive in Heho and drive about an hour to Nyaung Shwe, the gateway to the unique and magical Inle Lake, which is located about 880m above sea level and is 22 km long and 11 km wide. Along the way, we make a stop at the ancient teak wooden Shwe Yan Pyay monastery with the oval windows.

Insight Inle Lake

Enjoy a delicious Shan lunch with view of the canals, rice paddies and the mountain forming a backdrop before we begin our boat ride on the lake. We shall cruise to a section of the lake hidden from regular tourist routes and you would be welcomed by a local Intha family living on stilts and have a glimpse of the unique culture of the Intha. Get an insight into the life of the locals and then navigate through the strips of their floating vegetable farms in a local canoe and try harvesting their produce on the floating “land” if you wish! Cruise and check into your resort and catch the stunning sunset over the lake.

Day 5

INLE LAKE (B,L)

A day on the lake

Enjoy a full day boating around the lake.

Highlights include the rotating five-day markets frequented by the Shan and Pa O people living nearby; the famous Intha fisherman rowing in the one-legged style characteristic of Inle Lake. We will also visit the Phaungdaw U Pagoda, a local cheroot factory (Burmese cigar), Intha Heritage House where the Burmese cats are bred and if you want a weaving factory. We would also cruise through the beautiful creeks to arrive at the “forest pagodas” at Indein, home to several Pa O villages.
